Father Joe's Villages at 15th & Commercial is a 12-story, mixed-use, affordable housing and child development complex located at the edge of downtown San Diego, CA. A project of Father Joe's Villages, its programming provides contemporary housing to San Diego’s economically challenged and homeless population, while merging seamlessly within its urban context.
The project program is comprised of three distinctive features — an extensive child development facility serving homeless children, 65 affordable housing units for individuals with qualifying annual incomes, and 75 transitional housing units for homeless single men.
The design blends colored panels, concrete and painted stucco, coordinating with the colorful context of the project. Large windows provide views and flood the daycare center with natural light, while exterior sunscreens protect occupied spaces from intense sunlight, reduce solar heat gain, and allow natural light to penetrate deeper into the building interior. Spacious exterior balconies and large terraces provide venues for outdoor activities. The project achieved GreenPoint Rated status.
