Joseph Wong, FAIA has been honored with the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award by UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design. A 1972 graduate and 1974 Master of Architecture alum, Joe was recognized for his exceptional achievements as both an architect and civic leader.
Joe founded his eponymous San Diego-based firm in 1977 at 26 years old, with 2023 marking 46 years of successful practice. He and his team have completed several notable civic and large-scale mixed-use projects in the Southern California region and throughout Asia. Joe is especially proud of the firm’s contributions to the community, including architectural services for local nonprofits including the San Diego Chinese Historical Society and Museum, Father Joe’s Villages, Ronald McDonald House Charities, The Alpha Project for the Homeless, and the La Jolla Music Society. Joe is especially proud of the architectural services that JWDA has provided to nonprofit organizations including the San Diego Chinese Historical Society and Museum; Father Joe’s Villages; Ronald McDonald House Charities; The Alpha Project for the Homeless; and the La Jolla Music Society.
In addition to his architectural work, Joe has served on the Board of Directors for the Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC) and the San Diego Redevelopment Agency. He currently contributes as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council at UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design and serves on the Advisory Board of UC San Diego’s Real Estate and Development program.
