The Palisade at Westfield UTC is a 23-story, cast-in-place concrete residential tower clad in a semi-transparent skin of aluminum panels and floor-to-ceiling glazing. The building’s architectural massing is fluid and related to the coastal shoreline; balconies are sculpted to flow in and out of the larger building mass.

Joseph Wong Design Associates (JWDA) designed the porte-cochere with large, sweeping forms and a 3-D fold clad with aluminum panels finished in Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings’ Valspar brand Gray Blue coating.

Joseph Wong, FAIA, founder and president at JWDA, says, “The fold gives the porte-cochere soffit the visual effect of rippling water overhead.”

California Sheet Metal Works Inc. fabricated, and Suffolk Construction Co. installed, wet-sealed, 1/8-inch-thick aluminum panels finished in Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings’ Valspar brand coatings in Regal White and Bright Silver, which complement the softer tones of the storefront system and other metal finishes. Suffolk Construction also installed Vision Systems Inc.’s window wall system with Viracon Inc.’s insulating and low-iron storefront glazing.

The Palisade at Westfield UTC has a 4,300-square-foot indoor-outdoor rooftop sky lounge with views of the Pacific Ocean. Suffolk Construction installed East and West Aluminum Craft Ltd.’s exterior balcony railings.

“One of the most dramatic applications of metal panel on the project is the curved form of the roof that tops out the tower,” Wong says. “When lit from the underside at night, the cantilevered roof appears to float above the building.”

The 566,196-square-foot, LEED Gold-certified apartment tower has 300 units, an outdoor terrace with a pool and event spaces, and, on the second level, coworking space with conference rooms and meeting spaces. It has a clubhouse, fitness venue, kitchen, library, sports lounge and yoga deck. – Christopher Brinckerhoff

The JWDA team includes Joseph O. Wong, FAIA; David N. Priest, AIA; Shannon Fu, RA, LEED AP; and Zhuoxin Fang, AIA, LEED AP BD+C.
