Nook East Village Receives Civic San Diego Approval

nook east village_001Civic San Diego has approved Nook East Village, a 5-story, 91-unit Single Room Occupancy (SRO) development located at the corner of 15th and K Streets in the East Village neighborhood of downtown San Diego.  The Nook’s studios are affordable by design and will deliver a new housing option to the community.

The Nook will feature furnished units, each with their own private bathroom and kitchenette.  Averaging 250-SF, each unit is designed with efficiency in mind.  Amenities include community room, fitness room, and 1,800-SF of retail space along K Street.

The site is rectilinear and narrow; comprised of two parcels totaling approximately 7,700-SF. The on-grade parking area is enclosed by the retail space, lobby, and common areas.  The ground floor layout maximizes the user experience by highlighting active uses along the sidewalk while minimizing the impact of the parking area hidden behind it.

Different planes and materials push- and pull- the building mass; creating a building façade that is dynamic and contemporary.  Design elements deliver subtly-crafted details, use of high-quality materials, and pleasing proportions of scale that enhance the building’s identity while simultaneously drawing from the personality of the surrounding area.
