NEVP Phase 1 receives 2015 AIASD Urban Design Honor Award and “Divine Details” Distinction
11.2015
The North Embarcadero Visionary Plan (NEVP) Phase 1 project has received the 2015 San Diego AIA Urban Design Honor Award and Divine Detail Award. JWDA shares this distinction with an esteemed list of designers, consultants and city entities.
Following a highly collaborative public engagement process with over 20 public workshops, the design and ownership teams worked diligently to resolve the functional complexities inherent to a working waterfront while creating an attractive, comfortable environment for San Diegans to enjoy. The AIA Urban Design Honor Award and “Divine Detail” Award celebrates the process, the design and the future of the North Embarcadero as a world-class waterfront.
The 1,000-foot-long public space adjacent to San Diego Bay is the first phase of a $200 million, 10-phase project, which had remained in a conceptual stage for more than 20 years. Phase 1 of the NEVP increases and enhances the public’s access to San Diego Bay through a magnificent public esplanade and waterfront promenade. Core design objectives included finding ways to gracefully incorporate public amenities within a landscape that must dramatically expand and contract while demonstrating ecologically sound storm water treatment.
Phase 1 of the NEVP reclaims vehicular oriented space and returns the water’s edge to San Deigan’s and the thousands of tourists enjoying the many cultural activities found along the waterfront. Amid the lush landscape of trees, paths and plazas, visitors find architecturally bold ticket kiosks, shade pavilions, restrooms and a café. Custom lighting, graphics, and furnishings that recall the “craft and heft of the maritime industries” denote the site’s past and the city’s plans for an enduring future.
