01.2012

2012JanNewsImage1JWDA has teamed with Swinerton Builders to provide design-build services for the new $30 million Social and Behavioral Sciences Building for San Diego Community College District at Mesa College. The project includes approximately 66,000 SF of new classroom and laboratory space as well as student/faculty common areas. Departments served by the new facility will include History, Geography, Philosophy, Sociology, Communications, Psychology, Anthropology and Health Sciences.

The new structure is being designed to achieve LEED Silver certification and features a natural ventilation system with motorized operable vents which can be used to provide flow-through ventilation in lieu of mechanical air-conditioning on many of San Diego’s gently warm days. Classrooms are organized along a single-loaded exterior corridor with sleek glass curtain walls on north-facing walls and lightweight trellises and sunscreens providing shade on areas of the building with a southern exposure.

The JWDA team consists of Joseph Wong, FAIA, Paul Chelminiak, RA, Matthew Geaman, AIA LEED AP, Corinne Kelley, LEED AP and Tina Angeles.

The project will be completed in the fall of 2014.
