In spite of a global pandemic, the construction industry continues to move forward with vigor, with the JWDA team working hard these past two years to bring thousands of new homes to San Diegans. Even during these unprecedented times, the team’s active pursuit of new projects and enduring relationships with members of this industry (and the community at large) is due to the exemplary leadership of JWDA Founder and President, Joseph Wong, FAIA. So, it comes as no surprise that Joe has been honored, for the second year in a row, as one of the most influential business leaders in San Diego by the SDBJ. JWDA’s “bread-and-butter” is in hospitality and the residential design and urban planning of new communities. This nearly 45-year portfolio of residential work includes multi-family market-rate and affordable housing in downtown San Diego and the region at large. Recently completed projects include St. Teresa of Calcutta Villas (2021); Alila Marea Encinitas Beach Resort (2021); 525 Olive (2022); Belmont Senior Villages La Jolla (2022); and Framework (2022) as well as ongoing projects including Simone (2023); 800 Broadway (2023) and The Lindley (2024).
With a career that has spanned for over four decades, Joe is a highly regarded executive, colleague and friend in the construction industry with a majority of his work tied locally to San Diego. He is an active board member of the advisory council at UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design and UCSD’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning Real Estate and Development program. Joe is a Registered Architect in the state of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Washington and was elevated to Fellowship to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 2003, with only 3 percent of AIA members having this distinction.
Joe is serving as Prime Architect on several noteworthy projects including TCR’s Simone Residential Tower in Little Italy and recently completed Alila Marea Encinitas Beach Resort and Palisade at Westfield UTC.
