Alpha Square Receives 2016 Development of the Year Distinction

Alpha Square Affordable Apartments was honored in Our City San Diego as one of six projects recognized as the “2016 Development of the Year.” The $47.6-million project is a catalyst for change in the downtown community, combining the efforts of many to address the problem of homelessness. The San Diego Housing Commission, the City of San Diego, the Alpha Project for the homeless, Chelsea Investment Corporation, a developer focused on affordable housing, and JWDA joined forces to create this distinguished project.
Located at the corner of Market and 14th Street in downtown’s East Village, Alpha Square Apartments consists of a single six-story building with one level of subterranean parking. All 203 studio units are fully furnished with internet access, cable television and telephone service for all residents. Services on-site include street-front retail and commercial space on the building’s ground floor, along with case management, financial support and access to long-term treatment and other services for all residents through Alpha Project’s numerous programs and those of more than a dozen community-based partners. The facility provides common dining and recreational facilities, a computer lab for resident use, and a roof-top garden.
Alpha Square will be managed by The Alpha Project, a non-profit, community service group whose mission is to empower individuals, families, and communities by providing work, recovery and support services to people who are motivated to change their lives and achieve self-sufficiency.
