ALPHA SQUARE GRAND OPENING

Mayor Kevin Faulconer was joined by other state and local officials November 18, 2015 to open Alpha Square Affordable Apartments in downtown’s East Village. The $47.6-million project is a catalyst for change in the local community, combining the efforts of many to address the problem of homelessness. Alpha Square Apartments were a joint effort by the San Diego Housing Commission, the City of San Diego, the Alpha Project for the homeless, Chelsea Investment Corporation, a developer focused on affordable housing, and JWDA.
Located at the corner of Market and 14th Street in downtown’s East Village, Alpha Square Apartments will consist of a single six-story building with one level of subterranean parking. All 203 studio units will be fully furnished with internet access, cable television and telephone service for all residents. Services on-site will include street-front retail and commercial space on the building’s ground floor, along with case management, financial support and access to long-term treatment and other services for all residents through Alpha Project’s numerous programs and those of more than a dozen community-based partners. The facility will provide common dining and recreational facilities, a computer lab for resident use, and a roof-top garden.
JWDA provided architectural and interior design services. Emmerson Construction Company, affiliate to Chelsea Investment Corporation, served as the General Contractor. Other key consultants include Nasland Engineering; DCI Engineers; and Neri Landscaping. Alpha Square will be managed by The Alpha Project, a non-profit, community service group whose mission is to empower individuals, families, and communities by providing work, recovery and support services to people who are motivated to change their lives and achieve self-sufficiency.
