Alila Marea Featured in Hospitality Design as Best of 2021

02.2022

Alila Marea Beach Resort is a January feature in Hospitality Design Magazine as “Best of 2021”, selected by HD as one of 30 hotels from around the world that showcase the best hospitality has to offer.  Developed by JMI Realty and Fenway Capital Advisors, JWDA Architects provided full architectural services on the project with MARKZEFF as interior designer.

Alila Marea debuted in early 2021 on San Diego’s North County coast as the Hyatt brand’s first new-build in the United States.  The barefoot luxury resort offers 130 guestrooms including nine studio rooms, five one-bedroom suites and the Ponto and Grandview presidential suites.  Each room features coastal and garden views of the magnificent oceanfront site in Encinitas, California.

Given that the Alila Marea hugs a coastal bluff, San Diego-based JWDA and Brooklyn, New York, firm MARKZEFF wanted the 130-key hotel to echo the Encinitas landscape.  By integrating materials like concrete, glass and oak, softened by a color palette of beige and muted gray that reference the sand, stones, and driftwood of the beach, Alila Marea merges with the outdoors.  In the lobby, a staircase defined by towering steel rods is a showstopper, but it is the subtler details, including the rope adorning the guestroom chairs, large-scale ocean photography by Aaron Chang, and pool bar wall panels crafted with the same techniques used to make surfboards that reinforce the coastal narrative.
