JWDA Architects Celebrates Groundbreaking of ALX Camellia

05.2023

Community leaders and city officials, including Mayor Todd Gloria, gathered alongside the JWDA team to celebrate the groundbreaking of ALX Camellia, a new 531-unit apartment and mixed-use development located along Convoy Street between Raytheon and Ronson Road in the Convoy District of the Kearny Mesa neighborhood of San Diego, California.  The Convoy District is among the largest Pan-Asian business districts in the United States and is a part of the thriving economic hub of Kearny Mesa. Visit KPBS for more details of the groundbreaking event.

Developed by Trammell Crow Residential, ALX Camellia will transform the Convoy Asian Cultural District, and provide much needed housing and mixed uses to support the locality.  The nearly 5-acre site accommodates the proposed 5- and 6-story apartment buildings and separate 7-story above-grade parking structure.  The overall master plan of Camellia is designed similar to a campus community of built structures surrounded by landscaped elements including walking paths, gardens, and recreational areas comprised of resort-style pools, built-in BBQ stations, fire pits, dining tables and chairs, and lounge seating areas.

The project will provide 531 units, of which 22 are designated affordable, and 676 stalls for vehicular parking.  The main building entrance is located off of Convoy Street to the east and Raytheon Road to the north via a street promenade and roundabout intersection, and is equipped with surface parking to accommodate guests and future tenants, with access to the main residential lobby, leasing offices, and mail and package area.  Interior amenities include several private offices, conference rooms, a work lounge,  a garden lounge, a karaoke/movie room, a clubroom, fitness rooms and sky lounge that connects to an outdoor roof terrace that offers picturesque views of the main building pool and spa below.  Expected completion of ALX Camellia is anticipated for July 2026.

The JWDA team is led by Joseph Wong, FAIA; Matthew Geaman, AIA, LEED AP; Vivian Tria, RA; Paul Uong; Chris Fassler, RA; Sophia Del Mar English, Assoc. NOMA; and Eduardo Franco.
