Nook East Village – Micro Units on Trend in Downtown San Diego

nook east village_001Nook East Village is a 91-unit Single Room Occupancy (SRO) development located at the corner of 15th and K Streets in the East Village neighborhood of downtown San Diego.  The Nook’s SRO micro units are affordable by design and deliver a new housing option to the downtown community. Completion is slated for summer 2018.

The Nook will feature furnished units, averaging about 250-square-feet – each with their own private bathroom and kitchenette.  The Nook’s SRO is designed with efficiency in mind.  Amenities include community room, gym, and 1,800-SF of retail space along K Street.  The proposed structure is five stories tall – four stories of wood-frame construction over a single-level concrete podium.

The site is rectilinear and narrow; comprised of two parcels totaling approximately 7,700-SF. The on-grade parking area is enclosed by the retail space, lobby, and common areas.  The ground floor layout maximizes the pedestrian experience by highlighting active uses along the sidewalk while minimizing the impact of the parking area hidden behind it.

Although forward and contemporary, the design is conservative in style; it is finely detailed and carefully specified with high-quality materials.  The elimination of unnecessary ornamentation reveals the exterior’s pleasing proportions of scale and a harmonious articulation of the façade. Subtly-crafted details enhance the building’s identity while simultaneously drawing from the personality of the surrounding area.
