JWDA Project Wins AIA Honor Award

San Diego, California -- In early May the San Diego chapter of the American Institute of Architects gathered to celebrate recent projects built locally or designed around the world by local architects. The eminent jury handed out 14 awards from a field of 64 entries. Jardin de Jade, a project in Shanghai, China by Joseph Wong Design Associates, was selected to receive an Honor Award - the highest accolade bestowed by the chapter. The $1.2 million project entails the adaptive reuse of a former slaughterhouse. The existing building, originally buily in 1933, offers vast, beautifully-proportioned loft-like spaces, floor-to-ceiling windows with an art-deco flair and stately fluted columns at large, regular intervals. The new space is arresting in its boldness. The entrance, where back-lit onyx slabs glow like fire, captures the immediate interest of the viewer. The design is a fusion of historical and modern details, creating a bold mix of existing and newly imagined elements. Natural material such as stone, metal, fabric, glass and light are deftly woven together to create a mesmerizing ambiance. The 12,000 square-foot restaurant offers a delightful mix of spaces for guests to relax and enjoy. The client, Jardin Garden Restaurant Group, has several extant restaurants in selected Chinese cities and has asked JWDA to design two more. Hagy Belzberg, AIA, Principal of Belzberg Architects in Santa Monica, California; Curtis W. Fentress, FAIA, RIBA, Principal of Fentress Architects in Denver, Colorado; and Jinhee Park, AIA, Principal of Single Speed Design in Cambridge, Massachusets comprised the 2009 jury panel.
