San Diego, California -- Major improvements and expansion are underway at all nine campuses of the San Diego Community College District. Joseph Wong Design Associates has been selected to provide comprehensive architectural services for three new facilities at various locations. Each one of the projects must adhere to LEED standards in addition to providing high quality environments for higher education.
JWDA has designed a new 42,500 square-foot facility, designated as the The Center for Technological Excellence. The project includes lecture rooms, computer labs, multipurpose space, and administrative offices. The facility is centered around an open courtyard offering ancillary space that provides an oasis for students and staff as well as daylighting and natural ventilation within the complex. The project design targets meeting LEED Platinum certification requirements and offers a space specifically tailored to support learning. The complex also includes a 300-car parking structure.
The Aviation Maintenance Technology Building on the Miramar College Campus is a 6,000 square-foot building addition that ties into an existing 12,000 square-foot building. JWDA provided a comprehensive facility assessment that will result in the complete renovation of the existing space, effecting an extensive improvement of classrooms and laboratories as well as administrative offices and student services areas. Through a variety of sustainable strategies, the expanded and upgraded facility strives to meet LEED Silver standards.
JWDA is also providing full architectural services for a new Fire Protection and Emergency Medical Technician Training Facility. The project will centralize the program in a new 26,000 square-foot facility that offers offices, teaching space, an EMT lab, a computer lab, student and staff locker rooms, and enhanced outdoor training space. The JWDA team worked closely with faculty and staff to design a facility that offers state-of-the-art space for the program. The use of aggressive sustainable practices assures that the project will meet its LEED Gold certification target.
