San Diego, California -- San Diego joined a group of select cities such as New York, Seattle, San Francisco, Aspen, and Santa Monica when the Hotel Indigo opened its LEED certified flagship hotel in July. The Hotel Indigo will be the first LEED certified hotel in San Diego and joins a small number of hospitality properties that have been LEED certified. LEED certification focuses on performance in six key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, materials selection, water savings, energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and innovation in design, taking a holistic approach to sustainability in order to deliver certified performance. The process of LEED certification is rigorous and provides independent, third-party verification that a building project meets the highest green building and performance measures. Demanding metrics measure the impact of the construction and maintenance of the building versus traditional design and construction. As such, it has been determined the Hotel Indigo San Diego will use less energy than conventional hospitality buildings by using efficient materials and systems. Other means of increasing the sustainability of the building include the use of salvaged or re-purposed wood and building materials with recycled content to reduce the use of raw materials. Low-emitting volatile organic compound (VOC) paints, adhesives, carpets, and furniture improves air quality and a green roof that reduces heat gain and the need for refrigeration and air conditioning assists assuring that Hotel Indigo San Diego conserves energy and reduces waste and consumption.
Located at Ninth and Island avenues in the East Village, this 12-story hotel consists of 210 rooms and suites with green roofs on the ninth and 12th floors that are planted with drought-tolerant vegetation. Hotel Indigo is part of an upmarket boutique chain owned by the Intercontinental Hotels Group. Each of the group's Hotel Indigos take their design cue from the local flora and fauna. The Hotel Indigo San Diego uses vibrant colors, representations of local plants, and the work of local artists to reflect the local flavor. The Phi Bar and Bistro uses local and seasonal ingredients to further underscore the hotel's commitment to celebrating the local environment. The view from the ninth floor deck includes the field at Petco Park and during game time the entertainment may include play by play announcements from the field action among fire pits and comfortable seating. A water curtain in the lobby welcomes guest with sweetly scented cool air, while a pool and spa provide on-site entertainment for guests. The Hotel Indigo San Diego offers locals and visitors a tantalising glimpse of exciting innovations to come from the hospitality industry.
